A successful MPhil results in the production of a thesis that
must be an original contribution to the field of study or shed
an original light upon existing knowledge. Students wishing to
engage in research for a PhD normally enrol initially for a
MPhil and upgrade if their progress is deemed to be
satisfactory. MPhil candidates will be expected to successfully
defend their research in a student seminar prior to upgrading to
PhD. A student who is unable to transfer to PhD will have the
option to complete the MPhil thesis in order to attain that
qualification.
A successful PhD results in the production of an extensive
thesis that must be an original contribution to the field
showing academic distinction and rigour. Upon a successful
upgrade from MPhil to PhD, the PhD registration will be
backdated to the initial registration for MPhil.
All students are expected to attend a taught research training
programme as part of their studies for their research degree.
Theses for MPhil and PhD will normally be examined by two
examiners (not including the supervisor), at least one of whom
must be an external examiner.
