The MA degree consists of both teaching and assessment methods, which is what makes the MA degree different from the PGCert and PGDip.

There are three courses that are being offered on the MA programme, validated by Loughborough University, which awards the degree. MA degree courses are based on a credit system.

MASTER OF ARTS (MA)
Credits to be attained: 180 credits
Course Duration:
  • Full time - 1 year
  • Part time - 2 years
Tuition Fees*:
  • Home and EU students
    Full time Courses: £2,800
    Part time Courses: £1,500 per annum
  • International Students
    Full time Courses: £6,200

* Students are required to pay their tuition fees at registration and should pay the first instalment within 7 days of the start of the first semester. Fees are charged on an annual basis. The fees listed are for 2006/2007 entry.

How does the credit system work?
120 credits must be obtained from taught modules. In addition, a dissertation must be submitted at the end of your studies, which is worth 60 credits, to complete 180 credits required to obtain a MA degree.

There are certain modules which are compulsory for each given MA programme and hence must be selected. In addition students can take up optional modules to complete the required credits.

All the taught modules are either 30-weighted or 15-weighted and there are two ways that the requisite 120 credits can be made:
1. The student takes two 30-weighted and four 15-weighted modules, or
2. The student takes three 30-weighted and two 15-weighted modules.

The following modules are offered, although not all modules will necessarily be available in any particular academic year/semester:

  • 30-weighted modules
    Islamic sources: Qur'an and Sunnah, Islamic History, Islamic Economics, Islamic Law (fiqh), Muslim Political Thought, Islam and Pluralism, Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care, Gender Issues and Family Life in Islam and Management of Mosques, Trusts and endowment.
  • 15-weighted modules
    Islamic Banking and Finance, International Development and Finance, Cross-Cultural Management, Quantitative Methods, Muslim Political Thought, Islam in Europe, Gender Issues and Family Life in Islam, Islam and Pluralism, Life of the Prophet Muhammad, Management of Mosques, Trusts and endowment, Inter-Faith Relations, Financial Systems: Markets and Institutions, Financial Analysis and Management, Major Trends in Muslim Thought: Islamic Theology and Philosophy and Major Trends in Muslim Thought: Tasawwuf, and Research Methodology.

What degrees are on offer?
We have two intake periods (September and February every year) and offer the following MA degrees:

  • MA Islamic Studies
    The MA Islamic Studies programme must include: Islamic Sources: Qur'an and Sunnah (30), Life of the prophet Muhammad (15), Research Methodology (15), Dissertation [Islamic Studies] (60), plus a choice of additional taught modules, approved by the Programme Director, to make up the required credit. Please refer to List of Units/ Modules for more information regarding each taught module.
  • MA in Muslim Community Studies
    The MA in Muslim Community Studies programme must include: Islam and Pluralism (30), Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care (30) Research Methodology (15), Dissertation [Muslim Community Studies] (60), plus a choice of additional taught modules, approved by the Programme Director, to make up the required credit. Please refer to List of Units/ Modules for more information regarding each taught module.
  • MA Islamic Banking, Finance and Management
    The MA Islamic Banking, Finance and Management programme must include: Financial Systems: Markets and Institutions (15), Research Methodology (15), Dissertation [Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance] (60), Islamic Economics (30), Islamic Banking and Finance (15), Cross-Cultural Management (15), plus a choice of additional taught modules, approved by the Programme Director, to make up the required credit. Please refer to List of Units/ Modules for more information regarding each taught module.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants wishing to register for the MA courses must normally have at least a second-class honours degree from a recognised University or its equivalent in a relevant subject area. Those who are over 25 years of age and do not satisfy this requirement, may be considered on the basis of maturity and experience in the relevant subject area.

Students are expected to be competent in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or above is normally required) to study academic material, complete their thesis and undertake oral examination.

The Markfield Institute will respond to completed applications within two weeks, and may also seek additional information from referees and/or call the candidates for interview. The Institute regrets that it is unable to reimburse any travel costs incurred.

Applications for September 2007 intake are now being accepted so if you want to enrol then please get your applications to us as soon as possible, preferably before 31st August. Applying for grants from appropriate bodies and visas to come to the United Kingdom will require earlier applications.

You can apply for the February 2008 intake from November 2007 onwards.
