Requirement
Applicants wishing to register for the PgCert, PgDip and MA
courses must normally have at least a second-class honours
degree from a recognised University or its equivalent in a
relevant subject area. Those who are over 25 years of age and do
not satisfy this requirement, may be considered on the basis of
maturity and experience in the relevant subject area.
Applications will be considered on an individual basis. If
accepted, these applicants will be registered for the PGCert and
if they successfully complete this course, they will be
transeffered to the MA programme.
Applicants interested in the research degrees (MPhil and PhD)
must normally have a good Bachelors degree or an MA degree in a
relevant subject. Students wishing to enrol for a PhD will
normally be required to enrol for a MPhil first.
For admission to the Certificate course in Muslim Chaplaincy,
candidates will be expected to possess some basic Islamic
knowledge, in addition to GCSE "A"Level or the equivalent
standard of education. They will also be required to be
competent in the English language and to have developed
inter-personal skills, with some experience of community work.
Those without the prescribed educational qualifications but with
the appropriate background and experience will also be
considered.
If deemed necessary, an applicant will be advised to undertake
foundation courses in Arabic, English, or Fundamentals of Islam.
The Institute may also advise students to follow certain courses
if they are deficient in Islamic knowledge or in some other
discipline.
The Institute may also seek additional information from referees
and/or call the candidates for interview.
Students are expected to be competent in the English language (IELTS
6.5 or above is normally required, IELTS 7.0 for MPhil/PhD) to
study academic material, complete their thesis and undertake
oral examination.
