Why a course on Muslim Chaplaincy?
Muslims are now part of the religious and cultural landscape of
Britain. As with other communities, they are affected by a
number of social problems in all sections of society. The need
is growing for Muslim Chaplains in schools, higher and further
education, health service (hospitals and hospices), social
welfare, prisons, the police, armed forces and industry. An
overview of the situation in Europe reveals a similar pattern.
As Muslims become an integral entity within the social fabric,
the development of strong institutional infra-structures become
essential. The development of specific courses which facilitate
and train professionals working in the areas of chaplaincy and
pastoral care is illustrated by the current situation of the
Muslim communities in the UK particularly, and in Europe
generally. It is with this in mind that MIHE has devised a
course in the Training of Muslim Chaplains. The aim is to
contribute to the creation of sound and stable communities able
to function harmoniously within the framework and institutions
of the wider society.
How is the course structured?
The course is over 8 months, starting generally in February and
finishing in September. This will lead to a Certificate in
Muslim Chaplaincy awarded by MIHE. It will have three strands: •
Prison Service • Health Service • Education Service which will
consist of a theoretical and practical element.
The theoretical part of the course will be conducted on the 8
days, generally one every month, and will include a weekend. The
taught days run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
For practical training, students will undertake a 60 hour
placement at one of the following: • HM Prison Service • NHS
Hospital • Further or Higher Education Chaplaincy

What is the course content?
The contents of the theoretical part of the course will include:
» Introduction to Chaplaincy Work » Introduction to the Criminal
Justice System » Introduction to the Health Service System »
Introduction to the Education System » Race Awareness »
Methodology of Communication » Islam and the Gender Issue »
Islam in Britain » Pastoral Care in Islam » Counselling – The
Islamic Perspective » Human Development – the Islamic
Perspective » Spiritual Development – the Islamic Perspective »
Faith Development » Interfaith Relations.
How will practical training be organised?
The practical part of the course will involve at least 60 hours
of placement in a prison, a hospital or an educational
establishment organization. The objective of the placement is to
enable each student to observe closely and, wherever possible,
practice and experience an area relevant to his or her field of
interest. Within the context of the placement, the student
should be able to demonstrate his or her ability in relating the
skills and knowledge gained from the course. This will help to
integrate theory and practice and to develop good learning
patterns for the future.
Assessment
A 2,500-3,000 word evaluation of, and reflection on, the
placement from both an Islamic and a general perspective, course
attendance, presentations and placement report.
Where will the course be delivered?
